At Social Capital, the best part of our job is working with fun and inspiring people. We couldn't be happier to introduce our new Editor, Elize van der Laan. Berlin-based Elize is your go-to for the best natural wine bar (The Rad), the best vintage finds (Kranoldplatz Flea Market), and the best books. Here, Elize tells us all about herself, from her mega international background, to what living a good life means to her. Over to you!
Can you introduce yourself in a few sentences?
I was born in the Netherlands, raised in Central Oregon and have been hopping between Amsterdam, Copenhagen and Berlin for the last 10 years. When I’m not writing, you can find me on the hunt for good vintage, perusing local galleries and libraries, strolling down markets, discovering niche bands and exploring the best spots in town for great coffee and wine. I call Berlin home now.
What do you do for work?
I’m a writer, and I work on all sorts of projects that range from long-form articles and editorial work to strategic communication and branding. I discovered my true passion for combining creativity and strategy while working at Advance, an agency in Copenhagen, where I got to hone my skills by conceptualizing global campaigns for clients that ranged from Coloplast to The LEGO Group. Bringing the world of LEGO to life taught me the value of imagination when developing communication that truly stands out, and I’ve carried that with me since launching my own business. Being independent lets me continue my work with various agencies while collaborating with other brands I love and exploring new and exciting projects…like joining the team at SLICE Mag!
How did you get to where you are today?
By stepping out the door and meeting people. From having a chat at a neighborhood café to meeting people at flea markets, I’ve gained inspiration and made the connections for my biggest projects through striking up conversations at the most unexpected times.
What does living a good life mean to you?
One word: community. Whether it’s maintaining friendships around the globe or being familiar with your local barista, flower shop owner and wine bar staff, this really is what it’s all about for me. I’m eternally interested in getting to know people’s stories, hear what gets them out of bed every morning and find out what their wildest dreams are. When you’re part of a strong network of people who care about each other’s happiness and well-being, the opportunities of what you can accomplish together are endless.
What’s something you wish you’d known 5 years ago?
Life gets really fun when you stop trying to compartmentalize everything. When work, passion, community, curiosity and motivation meet, that’s when true magic happens.
Who’s someone you look up to?
My big sister, Julia. She’s a PR hustling, art-loving, creative and gorgeous New York baddie who always gives the best advice (and can give it while ordering coffee, doing her hair and running to catch the train all at once). She’s my rock.
What’s the best life lesson you’ve learnt?
Think in solutions, not in problems (thanks for that one, sis!).
What do you dream about?
Having the time to learn every language and read every book. Oh, and Berlin without winter.
What is one thing you recommend?
Go on a solo expedition. It doesn’t need to be a big trip or getaway–even going to a concert, movie or exhibition alone can be an incredible source of inspiration and awareness.
What song would be the soundtrack to your life?
This changes on the daily! Today it’s ‘Come Back to You’ by Crooked Colours.
Finally, give us a hotspot in your city, or a city you love!
The Südstern farmer’s market here in Berlin. Go there on a Saturday afternoon for the most gorgeous fresh flowers, best neighborhood vibes and a fresh oyster or two.
